Westerman was a prolific author of children's literature, many of his books being adventures with military themes. He is known to have published at least 174 books during his lifetime, all the more remarkable given that the first was published when he was 31 years old. Westerman was once voted the most popular author of stories for boys in the 1930s. His books sold over one and a half million copies in his lifetime. He served in the British Navy and Royal Flying Corps during World War I and in the Dorset Home Guard during the Second World War.
