Debra Wain has been a PhD candidate at Deakin University where she is conducting creative-practice research into the connections between food, women and culture as scrutinised through the lens of short story writing. Her honours thesis focused on identity and belonging in Australian outback townships. "Sponge cake" was written as part of the creative component of this thesis.
