BiographyHistory

John Freeman was born Edward Oxford in 1822. He was convicted of high treason for attempting to shoot Queen Victoria in London, England, in 1840 and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He was sent to Bethlehem Asylum and later Broadmoor Asylum before his release in 1867. He left for Australia settling in Melbourne. He wrote Lights and Shadows of Melbourne Life (1888).
