1 Colonial Circumstances, or, Ups, Downs, and Ups T. M. A. , 1873-1874 single work novella John Plimsole, a Sydney-side squatter, builds his homestead, Wanwarra, in Victoria in 1848 for his wife Maggie and daugter Mattie. In 1851 gold is discovered very nearby and he profits from meat sold to the diggers. He meets a friend from England, John Cullen, on a trip to property and the family move to Melbourne, Plimsole falling into the coils of Jonas Cotes to whom he promises his daughter, Mattie, as wife. She falls in love with William Harper, however, so resistance and trouble deepen, especially as Plimsole loses his fortune and is in debt to Cotes ... Includes good descriptions of bush life, the heat, fires, a near-lynching on the California goldfileds, and the making of a station with the help of Aborigines and the enjoyment of prosperity and generosity restored.
