BiographyHistory

Claude Choules 'was the [last] remaining combatant of World War I ... [and] the last man in the world who saw active military service in both World Wars.'

Claude Choules joined the Royal Navy and served in the North Sea witnessing the German fleet surrendering at Scapa Flow. In 1926 he transferred to the Royal Australian Navy and served in Fremantle, Western Australia, during World War II.

In his 80th decade, Claude Choules took a creative writing course facilitated by Elizabeth Jolley (q.v.) and began writing his memoirs. These became the basis of his autobiography published in 2009.
