Joan Newman arrived in the Kimberley region of Western Australia at Old Mowanjum Mission in 1977. Joan volunteered in the mission store and her husband Milton Newman served as Administrator for the Aboriginal community. Joan helped relocate the community to the new Mowanjum Mission site and establish the new community store called Nulynungoo. She was also instrumental in the administration of Pantijan Station until she left the community in 1981.
