Brenda Hodge left school at thirteen to start work and was employed on farms and in the outback of Northern Australia. She was imprisoned in Western Australia from 1984 until her life sentence was commuted in 1995. She completed secondary schooling by correspondence and a BA in English and a Graduate Diploma in Creative writing from Curtin University while in prison. Her poetry written in prison vividly describes the violence ever-present in her life.
