'On my daughter’s birth certificate eleven years ago, I noted my occupation as ‘writer’. We were living in inner city Melbourne at the time. Now, as I fill out forms to register her for high school in Alice Springs, where we have lived for over ten years, I write ‘adult educator’ in response to the same question about what I do.
