MacCarthy's daughter, Maude was a well-known violinist.

Other published compositions (music only) included:
- 'The Lyceum Valse' [ca. 1895] Dedicated to the composer's daughter.
- 'The Toast of ANZAC' (march) [ca. ca. 1916-1919] Based on the Souter/MacCarthy sing 'The Toast is Anzac, Gentlemen!.

MacCarthy's obituaries all indicate that he wrote several comic operas. This is also mentioned in his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. However, no other works of this nature have been identified to date via Trove's digitised newspaper service.
