AbstractHistoryArchive Description
'Through sketches, poetry and other prose, the extraordinary exploits and personal reflections of the digger were immortalised in what came to be known as The Anzac Book. Drawing on the formal skills learned in the classroom as schoolboys, the contributions of these young men powerfully captured their felt experiences and struggles and became a way to raise morale amongst the soldiers and inform those back home of life in the trenches. From Desk to Dugout explores this particular moment in Victorian literary and educational history and its intersections with the war at Gallipoli and the ANZAC.' (Publication summary)
