AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Born on a Hunter estuary island, NSW, in 1857, James Clark was orphaned at age two, arrived penniless in Brisbane ten years later, and never looked back. Starting out in Torres Strait at 23, he became the dominant figure in Australia’s pearlshelling industry, The Pearl King. Then, with a young partner, he built one of the nation’s biggest pastoral companies. He ran an oyster business in Moreton Bay that supplied gourmet markets as far away as Perth, and was prominent in Queensland’s yachting and horseracing fraternities. Entrepreneurial, generous, with a reputation for straight-shooting, he lived life to the full.'

Works about this Work

Robert Lehane , The Pearl King Ian Townsend , 2016 single work essay
— Appears in: Queensland Review , vol. 23 no. 2 2016; (p. 283-285)
'In his introduction to The Pearl King, Robert Lehane quotes a journalist who, in 1932, expresses hope that the Brisbane businessman James Clark might some day be induced to ‘give the story of his life to the world . . . a moving epic of flood and field, of early sailoring days full of thrills’. James Clark never did write his life’s story. He died the following year. But with Lehane’s new book we are fortunate, finally, to have Clark’s biography.' (Introduction)
