'After Peggy Cannon’s death in 1998, her daughter Christina de Villier discovered a packet of letters. Dated early 1943, the letters were sent by Peggy to her mother from the war transport ship the SS Nestor on its voyage from Sydney to Liverpool via Cape Town, St Helena and Freetown. Against the advice of her family, Peggy with baby Christina, known as Cookie, accompanied her husband on his way to take up a new posting in England.Peggy never discussed the voyage; it was only through the letters that Christina learned about the hardships endured and how Peggy coped. Christina also learned about her life as a baby aboard the ship, a journey of which she has no recollection.' (Publication summary)
