The Freeman's Journal advises readers that 'we have not much to add to the previous information given to our friends concerning the prosecution undertaken against the proprietors of this journal by the Premier and Attorney-General Mr. James Martin.' The Crown has filed its declaration in the case and 'the matter is now ripe to go before a judge and a jury of our countrymen'.

The third item in the Freeman's Journal's weekly summary concerns remarks made by Henry Parkes against the Freeman's. In a speech to constituents at Kiama, Parkes implied that the views of the Freeman's correspondents were in fact those of the journal itself.

The Freeman's Journal welcomes a new publication – the Railway Pioneer – which it describes as 'a very creditable little newspaper venture'. However, the Freeman's protests that the Pioneer is currently distributed gratis: 'We would put in a mild protest against this, the Pioneer has considerable merit, is worth something, and we pray its manager not to bring up his patrons in the dreadful habit of not paying for their newspapers. Perfect demoralization must arise out of it.'

The Freeman's Journal advises that a 'very life-like photograph of the late deeply lamented Archdeacon M'Encroe has been published by Mr. Henry Cole, bookseller and stationer, 106 King-street. It is in vignette style, and pourtrays [sic] with exactitude the benevolent features of the worthy pastor of St. Patrick's.'

The Freeman's Journal advises of the publication, 'in pamphlet shape', by J. G. O'Connor of York-street, 'an account of the late Venerable Archdeacon M'Encroe, together with his last illness, death, and funeral obsequies; also the funeral oration delivered by the Very Rev Dean Rigny'.

A report on the 22 August 1868 meeting 'of the friends and supporters' of the Freeman's Journal at the Commercial Hotel, Taralga. The meeting passed the following resolutions (among others): 'That this meeting pledges itself to assist and co-operate with the Catholics in other districts in defending the Freeman's Journal against what we regard as an unjust and malicious prosecution of that paper by the Attorney-General' and 'That a subscription-list be opened for the purpose of collecting funds to carry out the first resolution'.

'Old Author' writes to report on the meeting of Grenfell's Freeman's Journal Defence Fund and to submit a draft for £17 13s. 6d on behalf of the fund.

This poem is introduced by some remarks from the Freeman's Journal.

The bulk of Buggins's column is taken up with his views on Henry Parkes and the latter's activities in Kiama. Some comment is reserved for the theatre: Buggins notes performances at the Prince of Wales Opera House of Rob Roy and The Heart of Midlothian during the first week of September 1868, and of the upcoming production of The Derby Day.
