This poem was originally published in the London Times on 2 July 1868 under the initials 'C. K.'. Some sources subsequently attributed the poem to Charles Kingsley, but Longfellow's biographer George Lowell Austin states that it was written by Charles Kent. The latter attribution also accompanies the poem's publication in the Sydney Morning Herald, 16 September 1868: 9.
