Notes

  • Comedietta.
  • Allardyce Nicoll, in A History of English Drama, 1660-1900 (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1952), lists two plays by James Pilgrim which include 'The Limerick Boy' in the title: Paddy Miles, The Limerick Boy (1836) and The Limerick Boy (1865). Other sources do not distinguish between these titles. AustLit has not yet established the provenance of the play/plays produced in the Australian colonies, however, advertisements for the 1868 and 1888 productions do not include the prefix 'Paddy Miles'. (In the December 1868 production at Sydney's Prince of Wales Opera House, advertisements note that the role of 'Paddy Miles' was played by Johhny Foley.)
  • James Pilgrim's The Limerick Boy is included in AustLit because it was produced in Australian theatres during the colonial era; and/or is the subject of Australian literary comment, adaptation or creative writing.

Production Details

  • First produced at the Royalty Theatre, Soho, London, 12 August 1865. (Source: Nicoll, Allardyce. A History of English Drama 1660-1900. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1966.)

  • Performed at the Royal Victoria Theatre, Sydney, July 1868; at the Royal Prince of Wales Opera House, Sydney, December 1868; and at the Albert Theatre, Lismore, January 1888.
