AbstractHistoryArchive Description
An autobiographical essay about the author's return, as an adult, to her birthplace in what is now Belarus, and was, at the time of her birth, Polish territory. The author was deported to northern Russia in 1940, aged 13, and after WWII emigrated from Europe to Australia. The essay evokes her complex feelings on returning to her former homeland, finding parts of it changed beyond recognition. She travels to Belarus by Russian train, during a visit to Poland from Australia.
