BiographyHistory

Newspaper publisher and proprietor; printer; father of William Fenton Roulston (proprietor of the Dandenong Journal).

Harvey Roulston was born in Northern Ireland and served his apprenticeship at the Londonderry Sentinel. He migrated to America and, after a short stay, sailed to Australia. He worked at the Melbourne Argus and was 'one of a deputation chosen by the chapel of that paper to interview the proprietors when a reduction of wages was threatened' in 1855. Following strike action, Roulston and others were 'deprived of employment for a long period at the Argus office'.

Roulston subsequently worked on the Melbourne Punch and the Auction Mart before establishing the Richmond Australian (in 1858), the Boroondara Standard ([1861]) and the South Bourke and Morning Advertiser (1865).
