Notes
-
Holt's manuscript autobiography was thought to have been started about 1818. Largely conversational in style, the manuscript narrative was profoundly altered in Thomas Crofton Croker's edited version of Holt's Memoirs, published in 1838.
-
According to Ruan O'Donnell and Bob Reece, the manuscript was written in as many as four different hands, including Holt's own, and probably other members of his family. All writers were partly literate, and shared similar phonetic approaches to spelling.
