19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
John Ure's (1824-1901) A Tour Round the World presents a collection of impressions that were formed on his journey round the world. These observations were originally delivered by Ure as a lecture for the Athenaeum Institution. This volume, chronicling his journey through Australia and India, includes verses written by his daughter, and descriptions of the colonies. Landing in Western Australia, they continued to Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Ure noted the cheapness of the fruit, the climate, the layout of the urban centres, customs, architecture, sport and leisure, the Chinese community, and the empty landscape of Australia.
