19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Osmun Johnson (1835-1918) stated that his travels were intended as an antidote to his "exciting career," provoked by an "increasing desire to take a spin round the ball." His travel narrative Johnson’s Journey Around the World was taken from his diary which he kept daily during his numerous global tours. Johnson's preface did not convey the usual authorial humility, rather, he boasted of the interest that his observations provide for the narrative. The text contained two short chapters relating to Australia, providing brief descriptions of the cities and bush and coastline.
