Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
In the preface of his work Travels in Greater Britain, Charles Eric Rudolf Schwartze (1861-1935), B.A., stated that his original unwillingness to publish his journals as a ‘world tour’ monograph was put to an end due to a domestic calamity. Schwartze published his journal, dedicated to his father, as he had promised friends he would do so. The journal was an account of Schwartze's travels from London to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and India, and although the work was in diary format, it shifted between the plural and singular first person. As a diary, it is casual in its phrasing, but the narrative itself was a polished document. Schwartze's subjects are wide-ranging, including recounting everyday activities as well as observations of the countries he visited.
