Professor Tom O'Regan was a leading, internationally recognised scholar of the Australian film industry who unexpectedly died in July 2020.

Tom worked with AustLit for many years as a member of our Management Committee and as Chair of the former National Advisory Board. His belief in AustLit's role as an important national resource for the study of Australian culture led him to the development of ScreenLit and to support a range of research initiatives in the fields of Australian cinema and television history.

Under Tom's leadership, AustLit developed a rich collection of biographical, bibliographical and filmographical records of Australian written and produced films, television shows, and adaptations. He was instrumental in developing many research grant applications to support research in Australian Cultural Studies through the lens of film and television and was motivated by an understanding of the importance and influence of intermediality on industry and creative practice.

Tom's knowledge of film and television and their complex interlinking with practices of Australian storytelling more broadly was profoundly deep and wide, while his understanding of the relationship between policy and creative outcomes in film and television was second to none.

ScreenLit

Professor O'Regan was core to the development (both in its originating form and throughout the years following) of ScreenLit, AustLit's collection of film and television records. ScreenLit represents a comprehensive scholarly approach to concentrating the detail about screenwriters, screenplays, published and unpublished manuscripts, original works, and adaptations of literary works in one resource, and an important part of Professor O'Regan's scholarly legacy.

This legacy continues, and will always continue, in each and every film and television record that we add to the AustLit database.

Australians and Adaptations

In 2014, AustLit worked with Professor O'Regan on developing a digital exhibition exploring some aspects of Australian adaptations, especially to the stage and screen. In early 2020, we worked with him again to refresh, refine, and update the exhibition. The result is a multifaceted engagement with adaptation in its multiple forms, from the silent films of the 1910s and 1920s to blockbuster prestige television.

The project is significant to us as the last one on which we were able to work directly with Professor O'Regan.
