Born in London as Jean Rosemary Edwards, Rosemary Kavanová (also given as Kavan) married Czech soldier and Communist Pavlem Kavanem (Pavel Kavan) in 1945. They settled in Czechoslovakia, but Kavan later moved to the Czech embassy in London, where he was later arrested as part of a Communist Party purge and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Her son, Jan Kavan, was one of the student leaders of the Prague Spring in 1968.
