'We woke up when Linda got home from walking the dogs, their sandy claws scrabbling noisily on the lino. The screen door smashed closed behind them. It seemed earlier than she'd usually get home; yellow light slid around the edge of the curtains instead of the harsh white light of the fully risen sun. Andy threw the doona aside.
