- Jason cites Nam Le and Abigail Ulman as Australian writers who impressed him from their first published work.
- He also mentions reviews by Bradley Garrett (for Vanessa Berry's book Mirror Sydney) and Shane White (for Toni Morrison’s The Origin of Others).
- Jason refers to Peter Craven, a well known reviewer also based in Melbourne.
- Jason has great respect for small publishers in Australia, and specifically mentions Giramondo Publishing, Scribe Publications, Affirm Press, Black Inc and Text Publishing.
- Richard Flanagan is one of Jason’s favourite writers to both interview and read, and he always looks forward to new work by Peter Carey. He remains a fan of Tolstoy.
