  • The Plays of Oriel Gray

Oriel Gray's plays Lawson, Sur Le PontHad We But World Enough, and two versions of Sky Without Birds were digitised by AustLit in 2017 as a part of the Ian Potter Foundation funded Australian Drama Archive project. The project, which began in 2016, is in the process of selecting and digitising a number of plays from the first half of the 20th century.

The original playscripts, in typescript, are held in the Fryer Library at The University of Queensland. Each were scanned and run through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software and then hand-corrected in AustLit's content management system. The transcripts were corrected by AustLit Intern, Jemimah Thompson, whose research into the production history and reception of Gray's plays can be read here.

We gratefully acknowledge Oriel Gray's family for their permission to publish these plays. Please contact AustLit for further information: austlit@uq.edu.au

Oriel Gray lived in Sydney during the early part of her writing career and later re-located to Melbourne. Gray's major output as a playwright was in the period from the 1940s to the 1960s. Her plays are regarded as being ahead of their time due to the complex manner in which they deal with social issues. Gray inventively addressed issues of Aboriginal rights, life in the bush, migrant experience and women's employment.

Her first full-length play, Lawson, based on some of Henry Lawson's short stories, was produced by Sydney New Theatre, in 1943.
