Notes

  • Set almost entirely on the coast of Western Australia, with an interlude in the north of the country, which in this universe is under the control of the Japanese: the 'Red Wall' divides Japanese imperial territory from the rest of Australia.
  • Steampunk note: This story features a steampunk melange of airships, pirates, and imperial power. The point of departure in this alternate history is 1241BCE: Ögedei Khan, son of Genghis Khan and second khagan of the Mongol Empire, dies, just as he did in our history. However, while the real Ögedei Khan's death fractured the Mongol Empire, this Ögedei Khan is succeeded immediately by Batu Khan, allowing the Mongol Empire to increase in strength through continuity of leadership. Little changes for the following two hundred years, until the Golden Empire (also called the Horde) invades western Asia with their war machines. In addition to steampunk technology, the Empire also controls people with nanotechnology (which also creates zombies).
