Notes:
This version of the poem contains an eight-line final stanza omitted from the poem, at the request of the editor when it was first published in the Colonial Monthly, in January 1870. It was also omitted from the poem when Gordon subsequently published it in Bush Ballads. The editors of The Poet's Discovery (1990) comment that although it has been 'sometimes printed as part of the poem by modern editors, it has no textual standing' (p.134).
Notes:
'First appeared in the Colonial Monthly without the final stanza here printed, which was preserved by Mr. J. J. Shillinglaw.' (Bertram Stevens 1907)
