BiographyHistory

The Warumpi Band were an Australian and Aboriginal rock group who performed in Papunya, Northern Territory in late 1970s, early 1980s. The band consisted of George Burarrwanga as frontman and didgeridoo player, Gordon Butcher on drums, Sammy Butcher on guitar and bass guitar, and Neil Murray on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. The group released three albums: Big Name, No Blankets (1985), Go Bush! (1987) and Too Much Humbug (1996). The group disbanded in 2000.

1983 - 'Jailanguru Pakarnu (Out from Jail)', [the first rock song recorded in an Aboriginal Luritja language].

1985 - 'Blackfella/Whitefella'

1987 - 'My Island Home' [covered by Christine Anu in 1995 and by George Burrarrwanga in 2004].

1996 - 'Stompin' Ground] [Nominated for ARIA Award, named for an Australian rock festival, Stompen Ground held in Broome, Western Australia].
