AustLit

Australian Writing and Rock Music has two main focuses.

Works about Rock

Firstly, we track works that are within AustLit's scope and that have rock music or musicians as a subject. AustLit's scope covers creative writing, including life writing and memoir, with only minimal coverage (if at all) of sociological and historical works. 

As such, the works in this category include picture books and children's fiction, novels (including young-adult fiction), films and television, theatrical works, poetry and more.

Not all of the works in this category were written by rock musicians: this side of the project tracks how Australian authors employ rock music as the subject of fictional or auto/biographical works.

You can find all picture books in the AWRM dataset, or narrow down the search to find picture books adapted from song lyrics, picture books specifically about rock bands, or picture books written by rock musicians.

In addition, the list also includes the works that fall under the second focus of this project.

Works by Rock Musicians

What makes this dataset unique is the bibliographical network we have created by identifying AustLit 'agents' (authors, directors, illustrators, etc.) who are or who have been rock musicians. These agents were already included in AustLit for their creative outputs, but had not previously been connected through their shared heritage of rock.

Through this project, AustLit agents who have been or still are associated with a rock group or groups are now affiliated with the Australian Writing and Rock Music project, and connected to one another through organisational records for their bands, creating rich and unique relational networks.

At a future stage, we wish to extend this network of connections through producers, managers, agents, and promoters.

As of June 2023, when it launched, Australian Writing and Rock Music includes records for over 200 agents, who are connected through more than 100 rock groups.

Any creative work produced by an Australian Writing and Rock Music agent is automatically affiliated with the project, ensuring that we will continue to build a expanding record of the ways in which Australian rock musicians have pursued cross-media creative careers.
