The poem evokes the experience of reading Bruce Dawe's book of poems Sometimes Gladness in a Sydney bookshop, its dedication 'To Saint Maximilian Kolbe' bringing to mind Kolbe's death in Auschwitz and atrocities of the 20th century. It ends on a note of hope raised by the thought of Jesus Christ's presence in human history.
