Early Literary Responses to Charles Harpur, Vijay C. Mishra , single work criticism
Mishra discovers that the early response to Harpur was ambivalent because of the active search by critics for a poet to represent Australia. Harpur, while the best poet in the colony, employed the style and conventions of English poetry, making it difficult to defend his claim as the Australian poet. Therefore, critical opinion wavered between grudging acceptance and condemnation, a factor that continued well into the twentieth century.
