1 The Bee Ruth Hall , 1868 single work novella Set in the USA, a sentimental tale of Ruth's marriage, the opposition of her in-laws, the death of her first child and her husband leaving her with two children to support. She is refused help by her family, including her brother 'Hyacinth', the eminent editor of a literary magazine. She survives poverty and lowly work until desperation drives her to try her success as a writer and as 'Floy' she gains enormous popularity and money. She refuses to recognise her family. (PB)
