— Appears in: The Australian Journal , December vol. 33 no. 391 1897; (p. 29-30) Domestic tale of Maggie, a young maid's fidelity and love for her poor French mistress. She saves to buy her a Christmas present - a bon bon box in the shape of Napoleon's hat, and saves her and the box from a fire in her mistress' block of flats on Christmas Eve. In hospital her mistress is reunited with her fiancee thought dead in the Franco-Prussian war - and Maggie is promoted to lady's maid. Maggie is compensated for her poverty in the tale by a warm family life - which her exiled mistress does not have; her loving heart; and the freedom from convention which the poor 'enjoy'. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , December vol. 32 no. 379 1896; (p. 100-102) A Texan cowboy loves a spirited lady of Texan and Mexican blood but her guardian threatens to disown her if she marries against his will and the cowboy's money is lost in his uncle's financial failure. He goes to Colorado to hunt for gold with a handsome fellow Texan who is in league with the girl's guardian to double-cross the cowboy. A hard and dangerous ride on a stolen horse dressed in men's attire enables the lady - actually the cowboy's wife of a year - to save him from his companion's plot to ruin him. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , November vol. 32 no. 378 1896; (p. 29-30) Romance of a young couple who had eloped together living on nothing in a rich house. The young husband is sick and the wife tries to think of a story to sell for their food. She dreams of a mysterious door into their apartment and a room in which there is a miniature portrait of a beautiful woman and a manuscript telling of a Cuban/American's tragic love for a Cuban beauty. His last testament written before his execution, it recounts their love affair in Cuba, their rapture, her secret sorrow, a stolen encounter between brother and sister which results in her death from a pistol shot - and his death which he suffers rather than reveal it was her father who shot her, not the narrator lover. A younger brother gives a false birthday to his sister's suitor and suggests a bicycle as a present - for his own use. Suitor and beloved rarely meet for a time as she is always out on her bicycle. He finally learns to ride too - but wins her by his failure to stay upright. Sub-plot of the Old and New Woman, bicycle bloomers etc. Light. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , October vol. 31 no. 377 1896; (p. 739) Narrative of an artist's model's devotion to her cruel and selfish husband who will not permit her to work for anyone else. She has given up her child and finally her virtue to earn money to feed him in his illness. She dies, he goes mad and his picture represents their final scene. Slight; pathos. (PB)

— Appears in: The Australian Journal , March vol. 31 no. 370 1896; (p. 331-332) US romance. An Easter meeting in Palermo promises love to a travelling American woman and man. A ring accidentally bestowed in parting cements their promise of another meeting in a year. But it also threatens disillusion when an abandoned wife dying in hospital recognises it as her husband's ring. All is made happy when the traveller is found to be the cousin of the absent husband.
