A contemporary review offers the following synopsis:

'A death is planned with cold-blooded ingenuity, and when it miscarries the intended victim takes a merciless revenge. The planning of this death springs a great many effective surprises, and it is rather important that future audiences should not know exactly what they are. The idea in the mind of the plotters is that a husband should be told by a doctor that he has an uncurable disease and encouraged to take out a bogus life insurance from which his wife will benefit. It is a rather dull business getting through realistic medica examinations and negotiations with the insurance agent to a situation where anything may happen and nearly everything does.'

Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of a French novel, which follows an acrophobic former detective who is unwittingly drawn into a friend's plan to murder his wife and claim it as suicide.

A Harley Street specialist, called to visit a patient in Cannes, unexpectedly runs into his old university friend and colleague Jack Thoma, and learns why Jack abandoned his old life and sank without a trace ten years earlier.

The third film/television version of Alec Coppel's play, and the second to have a script by Coppel.

Conceivably, this may have been filmed to the same script as the 1948 BBC version, which was also scripted by Coppel, but in the absence of any information confirming that (and in the presence of an entirely different cast and production company), this work has been considered an entirely separate work.

A largely negative review in the London Times offers the following synopsis:

'Judie (Miss Joan Tetzel) suspects that the death of her father, the head of the Bland-Nordahl Whaling Company, was due not to suicide but murder. She travels to the Antarctic to find out the truth, and Duncan (Mr. Ladd) signs on as first mate. The villainy of Erik Bland (Mr. Stanley Baker) would have been exposed earlier than it is had not the film the merciful habit of dropping the whole nonsensical business every now and again in favour of illustrated lectures on whales and whaling.'
