— Appears in: The Braidwood Independent , 4 September vol. 1 no. 2 1867; (p. 4)
The editorial writer for the Braidwood Independent, probably John Gale, comments on the proposed repeal of the Newspaper Postages Act. 'The Act provided for the taxation of newspapers printed in the colony, in their transmission through the post for the shortest distances; but a newspaper coming from an adjoining colony or any British or foreign territory beyond the Australias might be carried by post from one end of the colony to the other without any charge whatever.' The writer concludes: 'We trust, that after all that has been said on the subject, by ourselves, our contemporaries, and the public, whenever Mr. Garrett's motion comes on for a hearing, it will be carried without opposition.'
