Hando and his best mate Davey are the leaders of a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray during the 1980s. Living off the dole, they inhabit a disused tyre shop draped with Nazi flags. When Gabe, who is running from a sexually abusive relationship with her rich father, becomes Hando's girlfriend and joins the gang, she inadvertently creates tension, because Davey is also attracted to her. After beating up a Vietnamese youth, the skinheads are forced to escape to a disused warehouse when his friends retaliate. It's here that Hando plots his revenge. Gabe pursues her own vengeance, by leading the gang to her father's house. When Hando kicks her out, she gets even by telling the police where the skinheads are hiding. Hando, Davey, and a recalcitrant Gabe subsequently take to the road.

When nine-year-old Celia's socialist grandmother dies, she is left to the care of her largely disinterested parents and her own imagination, which peoples the world around her with Hobyahs, the threatening bogeymen from the story read by her schoolteacher. When the openly Communist Tanner family move in next door, Celia finds some comfort in their friendship. But in small-town Australia in the 1950s, in the midst of anti-Communist backlash and a rabbit plague, neither the Tanners nor Celia's pet rabbit Murgatroyd are safe from the patriarchal authorities that constrain Celia's life.

'The portrayal of a painfully impossible liaison between a 16 year old boy and a 43 year old woman pushes beyond naturalistic observation into subjectivity as emotions run out of control. Emotional and physical enclosure suggested by the spareness of the verbal exchanges and the strong sense of place (the outer west of Melbourne) adds to the feeling of inevitability.'

In the Tasmanian highlands, Ruby Rose lives with her husband Henry (a trapper) and their adopted son, Gem. Superstitious and anxious, Ruby paints the walls of her house white to keep away the darkness, but still wakes in terror each night. To learn the secret that keeps her terrified and trapped, she must venture down to the valley, to her father's house and her grandmother.

'A disillusioned expatriate returns to Australia and is committed to a psychiatric hospital. There he meets and inadvertently assists a fellow inmate, Mary, to escape. Their relationship develops and they find a way to survive the uncertain future.'

'Two technicians in an isolated, satellite relay station pass the time as best they can. The daily transmissions are the only contact they have with the outside world: an uninterrupted stream of violent, bizarre images which form a stark contrast with the starkly beautiful surroundings of the relay station. As one of the technician's nightmares get worse, violence and madness come to the plains of heaven.'
