1 The Sting of Conscience P.G. McColl , 1898 single work novel Murder story told by lawyer/narrator Mr. Gordon. He relates the murder of his friend’s, bookmaker Arthur Graham, murder after the Melbourne Cup. Some years later, Robert Graham’s body is found in the Yarra. Gordon meets recluse Mr. Lindsay when visiting in Perth. Lindsay seems familiar, but Gordon can’t place him. On his deathbed, Mr. Lindsay confesses that he is Robert Graham, and he murdered his brother because they were rivals for the same woman. The body found in the Yarra was that of a blackmailer to whom Robert Graham had given a suit. Robert had gone to New Zealand, made money and then moved to Perth.
