'Drawing on hemispheric, oceanic, and southern theory approaches, this article argues for the value of considering the nineteenth-century literary cultures of the southern settler colonies of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa from within an interconnected frame of analysis. First, because of their distinctive historical and structural conditions; second, because of the density of their interregional networks and relations across intersecting oceanic spaces; and third, because of the long history of racialized imperialist imaginaries of the south. This methodological position rethinks current approaches to “British world” studies in two important ways: first, by decoupling the southern settler colonies from studies of settler colonialism in North America; and second, by rebalancing its metropolitan and northern locus by considering south-south networks and relations across a complex of southern islands, oceans, and continents. Without suggesting either that imperial intercultural exchanges with Britain are unimportant or that there is a culturally homogenous body of pan-southern writing, we argue that nineteenth-century literary culture from colonial Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa — what we call a “southern archive” — can provide a counterbalance to northern biases and provide new purchase on nation-centred literary paradigms — one that reveals not just south-south transnational exchanges and structural homologies between southern genres, themes, and forms, but also allows us to acknowledge the important challenges to foundational accounts of national literary canons initiated by southern theory and Indigenous studies scholars.' 'Best known for her “crying mother” poem written in response to the Myall Creek massacre in 1838, the Anglo-Irish poet Eliza Hamilton Dunlop (1796–1880) is a transcolonial figure with familial, literary and political connections to Ireland, India and Australia. Raised by her paternal grandmother in Ireland, her father worked as an attorney in India (where she would travel in her 20s), while her second husband, David Dunlop, was deeply involved in progressive Ulster politics before becoming the police magistrate in Wollombi and Macdonald River in New South Wales. This new edited collection by Anna Johnston and Elizabeth Webby addresses the scholarly lacunae on Dunlop, shifting the dominance of readings of “The Aboriginal Mother” (1838) in favour of emphasising the transcolonialism of Dunlop’s writing and embedding her work within a global print network.' (Introduction)

'This chapter explores one of the most potent of the European fictions or myths surrounding the south: the Antipodes. The north’s construction of the south as upside down or back-to-front with ‘feet’ facing the ‘wrong’ direction, the Antipodes proved a powerful metaphor through which settlers in Australia could critique both the colonial political establishment and the British metropole. Examining the poetry, fiction, letters, and illustrated articles in a range of newspapers from nineteenth-century Australia, this chapter demonstrates the extent to which the cartographic, corporeal, and metaphoric inversion associated with the Antipodes not only shaped what Paul Giles identifies as a ‘heightened form of comparative consciousness’ in the southern colonies, but was also re-inscribed in newspaper depictions of settler life, moving from the map to the routines and domesticities, as well as the culture and politics, of settlers’ day-to-day experiences. A practice of antipodean reorientation could be used by people living in and writing from the south as a way of writing back to the north, challenging both the cultural hierarchies and hegemonies of the metropolitan north, and the north’s preconception of the south as topsy-turvy and belated.'

'This collection brings together for the first time literary studies of British colonies in nineteenth-century Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Drawing on hemispheric studies, Indigenous studies, and southern theory to decentre British and other European metropoles, the collection offers a latitudinal challenge to national paradigms and traditional literary periodisations and canons by proposing a new literary history of the region that is predicated less on metropolitan turning points and more on southern cultural perspectives in multiple regional centres from Cape Town to Dunedin. With a focus on southern orientations, southern audiences, and southern modes of addressivity, Worlding the south foregrounds marginal, minor, and neglected writers and texts across a hemispheric complex of southern oceans and terrains. Drawing on an ontological tradition that tests the dominance of networked theories of globalisation, the collection also asks how we can better understand the dialectical relationship between the ‘real’ world in which a literary text or art object exists and the symbolic or conceptual world it shows or creates. By examining the literary processes of ‘worlding’, it demonstrates how art objects make legible homogenising imperial and colonial narratives, inequalities of linguistic power, textual and material violence, and literary and cultural resistance. With contributions from leading scholars in nineteenth-century literary and cultural studies, the collection revises literary histories of the ‘British world’ by arguing for the distinctiveness of settler colonialism in the southern hemisphere, and by incorporating Indigenous, diasporic, settler, and other southern perspectives.'

1 Literary Sociability on the Goldfields : The Mechanics' Institute in the Colony of Victoria, 1854–1870 Sarah Comyn , 2018 single work criticism

'Examining the connections between the social and economic aspects of mechanics’ institutes in their gold-rush settings of colonial Victoria, Australia, this article situates literary sociability at the heart of the institute’s function. Through an analysis of colonial newspaper reports and the surviving archives of five gold-rush era institutes (Ballaarat, Beechworth, Chiltern, Sandhurst and Stanley), it demonstrates how events like popular readings, lecture series and soirées worked to create a cohesive community in a diverse society. While the gold rush provided the economic means by which these institutions could be formed and their buildings erected, the institutes in turn lent a social and economic propriety to these growing settlements. This article argues that these popular, social events were crucial not only to the cultural and economic functions the mechanics’ institutes began to serve in the goldfields but also the role of moral, social and educational improvement that these institutes and their founding members envisioned themselves as playing. Excavating the hitherto ignored roles of women in these early settlements, this article examines women’s significance as markers of colonial respectability, while revealing the vital financial contribution they made to these institutes through the social events they organized.'
