AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'This series of autobiographies was recorded by the Bulman people at various times over the last twenty years and transcribed and edited by Gillian Cowlishaw. At the request of the authors they were translated in standard English. Bulman is on the border of Arnhem Land and Mainoru cattle station, which was the home and workplace of many Rembarrnga people until an American company acquired the lease in 1968. The subsequent events are told in these stories. The Gulin Gulin community at Bulman has connections with Ngukurr, Barunga and Maningrida'. (Source: Publisher's note)

He greatly appreciated the humour in these events. His story was recorded at Bulman and edited in 1989 and was read to him at Beswick in May 1991. Sadly, Bandicoot passed away in 1994'. His need for medical services means he has lived at Bulman for some years, despite wanting to return to Barrbarnrda outstation'. (Source: Publisher's note) Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995
y separately published work icon Nellie Camfoo Gillian Cowlishaw (interviewer), Gillian Cowlishaw (interviewer), Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995 Z1614302 1995 single work oral history 'Nellie Camfoo recorded the first part of her oral history in 1989 and the second part was recorded at the Djarada ceremony ground, Mt. Catt, in southern Arnhem Land in 1993. Nellie was born about 1930 and has always been involved in the world with energy and spirit. She is now a highly valued member of the Aboriginal Heritage Women's Committee involved in arranging for the protection of women's sites in the Northern Territory'. y separately published work icon Tex Camfoo Gillian Cowlishaw (interviewer), Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995 Z1614339 1995 single work oral history 'Tex Camfoo is about 70 years old and this is a brief record of part of his colourful life. For a long time he was reluctant to record his life story, partly, I believe, because parts of his experience evoke such strong emotions. However, as he recognised that perhaps there were not all that many years to go, he realised the importance of recording events which have considerable significance, not least as evidence about a little known aspect of this country's history'. y separately published work icon Willy Martin Gillian Cowlishaw (interviewer), Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995 Z1614418 1995 single work oral history 'This was tape recorded at Beswick on the 19th February, 1989. Willy was a man of considerable tribal significance, and was a powerful leader in the contemporary era. He had been a member of the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee in the 1980's. His sudden death from a heart attack in 1991 was a terrible shock both to his close family and to an extensive network of kin'. (Source: Publisher's note) Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995

'Minnie George and I recorded this at Mt. Catt in February 1989 and I guess that she was already in her 70s. Unfortunately she did not live much longer and I could not read it back to her. She took great pleasure in telling her story in Kriol in a high and melodious voice with much expreesive elaboration. In translating I have tried to retain the flavour of Minnie's expression'. 'Both florrie Lindsay and Dorothy Murray were at Bulman when I first worked there, and Dorothy and I formed the single women's camp in 1975. Dorothy is still there. Florrie was already quite an old lady when I recorded this account of her life in 1986. Unfortunately she did not live to have the written version read to her. Dorothy's story was recorded in 1989'. Catt in May 1995 he added some comments. Hitler is a clever man and a healer who is widely relied on for his skills. He travels widely in the area between Ngukurr, Barunga and Maningrida. Since her recorded these events at Mt. Catt outstation in March 1989 George Jaurdaku has sadly passed away, but Rembarrnga people have said they want his story preserved with the others so that their descendants can read about what happened. George Jangawanga is a renowned painter who lives most of the time at Weemol outstation. He recorded these incidents at Weemol in October 1993. It was read to George and expanded at Weemol in May 1995'. (Source: Publisher's note) Katherine : Barunga Press , 1995

'Jacky Ryan recorded his story at Bulman in 1989. Jack Ryan emphasised that he could not think in another language, but wanted his account translated into Standard English. The second piece, with Jacky Ryan and Billy Lukenawa taking me on a journey through their country, was done at their instigation. Also recorded in 1989, it was translated by Susan Murray and Vivienne Lawrence in Darwin in 1991'. (Source: Publisher's note)
