'The principal scenes are laid in the Near East. A young Englishman with a roving instinct sets out to see the world on inheriting a large fortune. While cruising among the Greek islands he decides to explore a mountain range with the aid of two guides. One of the guides is accidentally killed, and the other dies. Wandering alone in these lonely regions, the Englishman has some strange adventures, and meets a young woman of remarkable beauty. They marry, and a daughter is born. The mother dies when the child is born. The girl grows up, and is the image of her mother. Love enters into her life, and she eventually goes to the place of her birth. From this stage the story is developed to a remarkable climax.'

Notes

  • The newspaper article quoted above describes the author as having 'interwoven a delightful romance with a Grecian myth and produced an unusual story'.

  • In the novel, the heroine is given the name Alecto, one of the three Erinyes (Furies), along with her sisters Tisiphone and Megaera. Alecto's role in myth is to castigate humans for their moral crimes, especially crimes of anger against others.
