BiographyHistory

Jemima Leane sailed to Australia with her family on the Gloucester, from Plymouth, arriving 13 Aug, 1852. Her parents were Thomas and Jennie Leane. They settled first at Hackney, then moved to a farm at Gawler River. In 1858 the family moved to Old Blumberg (Birdwood) and 4 years later lived at Philptown (called Chain of Ponds from 1864, closed down in 1981), where her father owned the Post Office and was a shoemaker. He was also a prominent Methodist Preacher. Jemima married William Henry Clatworthy in 1876, and lived at Millbrook. She was the sister of the writer Caroline Leane.
