Alfred Dampier adapted and first staged Jess, H. Rider Haggard's imperial romance set during the first Anglo-Boer War (1880-81) in 1888 and revived it in 1896 as A Transvaal Heroine. In 1900 Dampier once again turned to Jess as inspiration, this time in response to the Boer War. The new work, titled Briton and Boer, continued the melodramatic approach of the two earlier works but this time with more of an emphasis on military spectacle.
