Editor's note: Australian Major General Jim Molan (b. 1950) arrived in Baghdad in April 2004, as deputy chief of staff for operations within HQ Multinational Force, Iraq, to help command the occupying forces of the 'Coalition of the Willing' in what he calls 'the conflict that followed the invasion' of 2003. Few Australian generals have written memoirs, and Molan's is valuable for its quality as well as its rarity.
