The narrator comments on a traditional Fijian dance being performed in Australia and feels regret for the losses she recognises: loss of complexity in the performance and lack of protocols of thanks and acknowledgement for the dancers. 'The people seem happy as they stand and clap,' the narrator reflects, 'but they do not know the meaning, only the exaggerated movements. The performance takes ten minutes instead of two hours' (p. 38).
