  • This poem was presumably inspired by the Comet Donati, named after the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati, who observed it in June 1858. The poem first appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald in November 1858, not the Empire as the Australian Town and Country Journal stated in 1880. In 1858 'Beta' (Samuel Bennett) was employed at the Sydney Morning Herald.
