  • Author's preamble: 'J. E. S. - I was indeed sorry to hear of the terrible state into which this correspondent has been so unexpectedly and painfully precipitated. I do feel for him very much, since it has become a matter of public interest; and I am sure that there are a great number of ladies who feel very, very sorry for his condition. I do really believe that there are many ladies who would give a practical demonstration of their sympathy, by sharing his troubles and soothing his throbbing breast, and - if I may speak for them -'
