AbstractHistoryArchive Description
This collection of essays applies the concept of 'unsocial sociability' (traced in the anthology's introduction through the work of Kant, Montaigne and Rousseau) to a wide range of women's lifewriting texts. 'With its cross-cultural and transhistorical perspective, the volume makes a distinctive contribution to current debates on women's lifewriting. Its emphasis on unsocial sociability offers a timely, provocative response to the established notion of the female self as a relational subject.' [Back cover]
Notes
-
In the 'Preface and Acknowledgements,' the editors comment on the relevance of Grace Cossington Smith's painting The Lacquer Room (reproduced on the book's cover) to the concept of unsociable sociability.
