Author's note: ''First Loves' is part of a creative nonfiction memoir which seeks to balance creative nonfiction's range of authorial positions—the 'diligence of a reporter' with the 'shifting voices and viewpoints of a novelist' (Gillen 2007)—to ethically use an invented a first person voice in biography. This recognises that creative nonfiction is a form wherein 'the presentation of information ... is paramount'' (Gutkind 1997).
