Notes

  • Foreword: This book belongs to the women who have marched to their own drums, listened to their own thunder, and dreamed their own distant dreams inside Boggo Road. It is an extraordinary privilege for all of us to glimpse, through them, the terrible profundity of the prison experience. Our thanks to all those production people who have made possible the sharing of this experience. A. P. Morgan, P. Clayton. May 1981
  • The new H. M. Prison for Women opened in 1903 as part of Brisbane's Boggo Road Gaol. In 1921 the female prisoners were transferred to a former V. D. hospital on the southern boundary of the prison reserve to allow for expansion of the men's prison. In 1951 they were again transferred, this time to another V. D. hospital, the former Lock Hospital. This was subsequently demolished and a new women's prison was erected on the site and opened in 1982. In 1999 this prison was closed, and was the last to do so following the earlier closure of the men's divisions.
